In this worksheet, students will practise spelling words containing the letter string 'ough' when it makes the sound 'or' (ought, bought, thought, nought, brought, fought).

Worksheet Overview

There are some words that many of us find difficult to spell.  They are really important for our writing though, so we need to practise them.

In this activity, we are going to look at the letter string ough.  It can be used to spell quite a few different sounds so we need to learn them all.

Today, we will look at words where ough makes the sound or.

In this activity, we are going to look at the following words and practise spelling them:

ought

bought

thought

nought

brought

fought

You can listen to them here:

Pay special attention to bought and brought as these two are often muddled up!  Bought is the past tense of buy and brought is the past tense of bring.

Spend a few minutes looking at these words before beginning the questions.
