Understand Subject and Verb Agreement

When you were writing, you have to make sure your work makes sense grammatically. 

Did you spot the error in that sentence?

It should have been 'when you are writing'.

This is called subject verb agreement. It means the subject (thing) in the sentence has to agree with the verb (action).
