Recognise Properties of Solids and Liquids

In this worksheet, students will be looking at the properties of solids and liquids and how they change state.

'Recognise Properties of Solids and Liquids' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 2

Year:  Year 4 Science worksheets

Curriculum topic:   States of Matter

Curriculum subtopic:   Solids, Liquids and Gases

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

Everything around you is made up of tiny particles - did you know that?

They are the atoms and molecules you may have heard of before.

Each individual particle is far too small to see.

In some materials, the particles are very tightly packed together and can't move around, so the material keeps its shape.

Solid particles

Materials like this are called solids.

Lego bricks

In other materials, the particles are not so tightly packed and are able to move around each other.

Blue liquid

This means that the material can change shape to fit whatever container it's put in. Materials like this are called liquids.

Liquid particles

It's possible for solids to change into liquids and for liquids to change back into solids.

For example, like this ice cube when it's warmed up and melts into liquid water, or water being cooled and freezing into an ice cube in the freezer.

Block of ice

In this activity, we'll answer some questions about solids and liquids and test what we know about these two forms of matter.
