Using modal verbs in our writing helps us to show likelihood and possibility

 

We can look at them and read them in the context of the sentence to work out whether something is likely to happen or not.

You should take an umbrella as it might rain. 

 

There are two modal verbs here - should and might

They tell us about the possibility of needing an umbrella and the likelihood of it raining. 

 

They help to give conditions to the sentence.
