Worksheet Overview

Whenever you have to write something, you have to consider the purpose (why you are writing) and the audience (who you are writing for).

One of the best ways to see what to do, is to look at good pieces of writing and see how vocabulary has been used.

In this activity, you will look at a piece of writing and work out what words have been chosen, what they mean and why they have been used.

Have a read of the text we will use and then get ready to answer some questions!

snowy field

The snow had fallen deeply overnight, and everything was covered in a calm quietness. The fresh, untouched layer of snow created the feel of a magical fairy tale. The trees, which had proudly shown their colourful leaves, were now bare, and their branches were outlined in frost.

The weak sunlight gave everything a soft, silvery glow. It was cold; you could see your breath in the air. In the quietness, you could hear the snow-covered branches as they creaked under the weight of snow and frost. The far-off calls of winter birds and scratching of squirrels dotted the air.

As far as the eye could see, the world seemed to sparkle with a million diamonds. The snow-covered hills and fields glistened in the sunlight. Frozen ponds and streams were like mirrors, capturing the icy beauty all around.

Buildings were blanketed with snow, and every roof top seemed to be decorated with icing sugar. The windows, covered in frost, showed scenes of people sitting by the fire inside. Footprints criss-crossed over pavements and gardens telling stories of people and animals rushing to get in out of the cold.

In this wintry stillness, it felt like the world was holding its breath. It was simple and beautiful, and time seemed to stand still as the world was covered in the magic of winter.
