Why is the weather always changing?
Every year, we have the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.
These seasons happen because of where we are on the Earth and how the planet spins, leaning towards and away from the sun.
When we are leaning towards the sun, we are closer to it, so the weather is warmer and drier.
The spring is when we get warmer days and in summer the days are longer and the weather is warmest.
As the Earth leans further away from the sun, the seasons change.
Our part of the Earth gets colder because the sun doesn’t reach us as much. The days are shorter and we get more rain. This starts in the autumn and we have the least sun in winter.
While we lean away from the sun, the rest of the Earth leans towards it, so places like Australia are having their toasty warm summer when we are having our icy cold winter!
Try looking at a globe and look at where the UK and Australia are!
So what does that mean for us??
Unlike animals, we don’t have a special coat that changes with the seasons, we have to change our clothes.
Did you know? Baby penguins are fluffy when they are born because it is so cold! Then they lose their fluff and get grown-up feathers!
You wouldn’t go out on a summer’s day with your big winter coat on, would you?
Just as you wouldn’t go outside and build a snowman in shorts and flip flops!
In this activity, we will practise spotting the correct seasonal clothing and which one to wear.
Good luck!
