QUESTION 1 of 10

We eat loads of plants - but I guess you knew that!  However, some of them are not always obviously plants, so this worksheet is designed to help you see where some of the regular, daily foods come from - maybe you'll get some surprises.

Let's find out....

Look at this bowl of food:

Bowl of mashed potato

What plant do you think it's made from?

Here's a fresh fruit salad:

The base of the pizza in the last question is also made from a plant. The seeds of that plant are ground up into flour to make a dough which is then baked to make the pizza base.

  • Question 1

Look at this bowl of food:

Bowl of mashed potato

What plant do you think it's made from?

CORRECT ANSWER
potato
EDDIE SAYS
Yes, that was pretty easy, wasn't it? Mashed potato - love it or loathe it, mashed potato is a good way of serving an energy-rich vegetable and so also finds its way into other foods like fishcakes.
  • Question 2

Here's a fresh fruit salad:

Fresh fruit salad

How many different fruits can you see in the mixture?

CORRECT ANSWER
five
EDDIE SAYS
There are five: strawberries, kiwi fruit, oranges/satsumas, apples and blueberries.
  • Question 3

Here's a pizza:

Pizza

Tick the different vegetables you can see on the topping.

CORRECT ANSWER
olives
peppers
mushrooms
tomatoes
EDDIE SAYS
So, it contains olives, peppers and tomatoes as well as the pepperoni, ham and cheese (which are from animals rather than plants). Strictly speaking the mushrooms aren't vegetables/plants (they're fungi) but we'll let you have that!
  • Question 4

The base of the pizza in the last question is also made from a plant. The seeds of that plant are ground up into flour to make a dough which is then baked to make the pizza base.

Pizza

Do you know which plant those seeds come from?

CORRECT ANSWER
wheat
EDDIE SAYS
Wheat is an amazingly useful and important plant - its grains/seeds feed literally billions of human beings. When the wheat harvest is poor it can mean starvation for many thousands of people. By the way, wheat is a cultivated type of grass.
  • Question 5

Over the past 10 000 years humans have bred different sorts of grasses to give us many of the seeds or grains that we use as food today. Can you name this seed/grain:

Rice

CORRECT ANSWER
rice
EDDIE SAYS
Maybe that was a surprise ... rice is indeed a type of grass which happens to like living in very damp conditions (which is why it is planted in paddy fields which are flooded). Maize is like sweetcorn and barley is like wheat.
  • Question 6

Cooking oil is made from plants. Which plant in the list is NOT used to make an oil for cooking?

CORRECT ANSWER
tomato
EDDIE SAYS
Amazingly they all have oil-producing seeds, except tomato seeds. Rapeseed is used for most basic cooking oils, sunflower and olive oils are also commonly-used and even peanut oil is available.
  • Question 7

Which type of fruit is the main ingredient for making wine?

CORRECT ANSWER
grape
EDDIE SAYS
Grapes have been used for thousands of years to make wine: the crushed fruit is allowed to ferment and this process produces the alcohol which makes wine such a popular drink. Of course, all the other fruits can be used to make a wine, but 99% of all wines are grape-based.
  • Question 8

Breakfast cereals are made using the seeds of different plants.

Tick any seeds in this list you think might be used to make breakfast cereals (like Coco Pops!).

CORRECT ANSWER
rice
wheat
sweetcorn
sunflower
oats
EDDIE SAYS
So ... most of them are! Here are a few examples: Rice Krispies (rice), Weetabix (wheat), Cornflakes (sweetcorn/maize), porridge (oats) and Harvest Crunch (sunflower). There are loads of others, of course!
  • Question 9

Here are pictures of four foods:

Pasta Bread  Cheese  Sugar
PASTA BREAD CHEESE SUGAR

Three of them are made using plants. Which is the odd-one-out?

CORRECT ANSWER
cheese
EDDIE SAYS
Yup, cheese is a dairy product made from milk. OK, so the clever clogs will say that the milk is made from grass, but to be honest all foods can be traced back to plants ... but that's another story! Pasta and bread are made using wheat (usually) and sugar is made from sugar cane or sugar beet.
  • Question 10

Here's a picture of some cocoa beans:

Cocoa beans

Which food in this list has cocoa beans as its main ingredient?

CORRECT ANSWER
chocolate
EDDIE SAYS
Yes, it's chocolate! Mixed with milk, sugar and other ingredients, cocoa beans make that yummy confection! Coffee uses coffee beans, liquorice is made from liquorice root and raisins are made from grapes.
