If you had to write down a conversation, you might need to make changes to what is said for it to make sense on paper.
This is because spoken English and written English are actually quite different.
When someone is talking, there are natural pauses when they take a breath, or when they are thinking, or when they might trail off.
They might emphasise certain words with volume or tone, and they might use inflection (going up or down in pitch) to highlight the important bits of their sentence.
They can also use their facial expressions and hand gestures.
When we are writing, we don't have these tools, so we need to use something that can have the same impact.
In this activity, we will be looking at how punctuation can communicate meaning in written English.
